Costs and Funding: How Do I Pay for Addiction Treatment?

Recovery Guide: Affording Addiction Treatment

COSTS AND FUNDING: HOW DO I PAY FOR ADDICTION TREATMENT?

The cost for alcohol and drug treatment will vary based on multiple factors….location, length of stay, type of services offered, facility amenities, and staff credentials, to name a few. For 30 days of treatment,  the average cost will range from $10,000 to over $30,000 per month. All treatment organizations accept direct payment (self pay), some take insurance, and only a few have public funding for people who have neither. Outpatient programs are lower in cost than inpatient, are priced according to their schedule and have similar funding options.

When you contact a treatment or recovery facility, the admissions inquiry representative will explain the financial details about their program.  If you have insurance, they can check with your insurance company to see how much of the cost will be covered. No insurance provider will ever cover 100% of the cost and you will be required to pay the remainder out of your pocket.

IF YOU DON'T HAVE INSURANCE OR ANY MONEY

For individuals who need help due to alcohol and/or drugs, are Texas residents, have no income or insurance, the only option currently is OSAR.

Front Steps

Front Steps manages the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless (ARCH) via a contract with the City of Austin. They offer emergency shelter, affordable housing, supportive and medical services to the homeless. Their program Streets of Hope provides a 30-hour harm reduction program addressing addiction and mental health as well as other important issues. They offer ongoing aftercare upon completion. The program is not a treatment program but a good way to start the recovery process for a person without other resources.

ARE THERE ANY OTHER OPTIONS?

There are four primary ways people get sober…

  1. Residential or outpatient treatment programs/centers
  2. 12 Step programs
  3. Other types of recovery programs
  4. Abstinence or self-help

There are no accurate studies or statistics showing which of these methods work the best or even how many people choose each method. Some people try all four methods, succeed or give up….some people only try one, succeed or give up. You might consider trying a low-cost option first and if it doesn’t work for you, then consider going to treatment. If you have already tried low-cost or no-cost options and you were not successful, perhaps treatment is the best solution for your alcohol or drug problem. A helpful guide for selecting the right program for you can be found on the Choosing a Treatment Program page.
