One of nine research institutes at the University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work, The Addiction Research Institute (ARI) focuses on issues related to substance use disorder prevalence, treatment, and long-term healthy functioning free from addictions. Our projects are based on a social work perspective, emphasizing factors at individual, family, organizational, societal, and cultural levels that influence resilience and recovery.

The Research Society on Alcoholism was established in 1976 to assist and encourage the application of research to the solution of problems related to alcoholism. RSA serves as a meeting ground for scientists working in all fields of alcoholism and alcohol-related problems. The Society, through its emphasis on research, has served as the interdisciplinary crossroads for the understanding of the causes of and potential cures for alcoholism.

The Waggoner Center for Alcohol and Addiction Research is an organized research unit of the College of Natural Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin. Established in 1999, the Center was made possible by a donation from M. June and J. Virgil Waggoner and matching funds from UT Austin.  The mission of the Waggoner Center is to develop solutions for the prevention and cure of alcoholism and related illnesses.
