Treatment for Opioid Addiction: Recovery is Possible
OPIOID RECOVERY
The current opioid epidemic in the United States is at an all-time high. In 2017 alone, the US Department of Health and Human Services issued over $800 million in grants to support treatment, prevention, and recovery.
What are opioids?
Cultivation of the poppy plant for recreational and medicinal purposes goes back centuries.
Originating from the opium poppy, heroin and opium are highly-addictive illegal drugs and are taken for a euphoric high. Overdose can result in death.
The active ingredient in opium is morphine and is used in many prescription pain-relievers. Continued use and abuse leads to dependence, withdrawal and death.
Which opioids are available by prescription?
Codeine
Fentanyl (Actiq, Duragesic, Fentora, Abstral, Onsolis)
Hydrocodone (Hysingla, Zohydro ER)
Hydrocodone/acetaminophen (Lorcet, Lortab, Norco, Vicodin)
Hydromorphone (Dilaudid, Exalgo)
Meperidine (Demerol)
Methadone (Dolophine, Methadose)
Morphine (Kadian, MS Contin, Morphabond)
Oxycodone (OxyContin, Oxaydo)
What are effective treatments for opioid addiction?
Many different treatment models, therapies and modalities are being used but some of the highest success rates are with Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT), defined as FDA-approved medications combined with behavioral counseling for a “whole patient” approach for the treatment of opioid dependence and substance use disorders.
